Terme di Caracalla or Baths of Caracalla is a historical monument in the Eternal City known for being one of the most impressive buildings in Rome. In ancient times, they were used as a place for public baths. One can also say that they were a kind of community center where people used to meet in large numbers. Baths of Caracalla was constructed by Emperor Septimius Severus and completed by his son Caracalla in 216 AD.

This place was opened for public by Caracalla and hence, this monument is also famous as Terme di Caracalla. It is believed that six thousand prisoners of war were used for its construction and this was done on a grand scale as still visible today. The amazing grandeur is sure to impress the people visiting here.

destinations in the Italian capital presently. Even today, it is quite a spectacle and an archeological wonder. In addition to that, this place was not only a bathing point, but a complete entertainment spot for the people of Rome.

One can compare this ancient thermae to a present day spa. Moreover, there was a gym, library, fountains, et cetera for leisure of visitors.

The actual construction of this building was completed during the reign of Severus Alexander. It was a vast area for taking baths and could accommodate 1600 people at one time. This spot is situated below the Aventine Hill and just a walking distance from the Roman Colosseum and Circus Maximus. A museum opened in 2012 is located below this monument in the tunnels to add to the brilliance of this place. According to Latin author Polemius Silvius, Terme di Caracalla was regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of Rome.
